City of Kouvola is promoting E-Commerce HQ in Monaco
City of Kouvola, in South-East Finland is a well-known logical center of rail cargo to and from Russia and Asia. Now the city is combining cargo logistics with data logistics.
Kouvola Innovation Ltd., a dynamic development company owned by the City of Kouvola, has made a master plan together with CTS Engtec for a data center – a new block to a strong logistical sector in Kouvola.
Hydro power plants and high reliability
Local power grid consists of two loops connected to Koria sub-station. Koria sub-station is one of the strongest in Finland having 3 x 400 kV feeds from different direction.
Within 20 km radius from the site, there are several hydro power plants and the three biggest of them are connected to the local grid. The Data center site is located right next to city center and close power utility’s sub-station and maintenance center. And if this is not enough, there are two high capacity biomass co-gen power plants just 2 km from the site. And yes, power plants are connected to the local grid.
All local power producers and power distribution companies are supporting the master plan and they are willing to participate to build-up the DC site power feed.
So it’s obvious that power generation and transmission system in Kouvola won’t let you down.

Connectivity – what more can you ask
For historical reasons Kouvola is major cross-connection of all major service and fiber providers. Diverse routes both to Europe and East are available. Distance from site to cross-connection is no more than one kilometer.
Latency to landing point of C-Lion1 is only 2ms. C-Lion1 is a high capacity low latency subsea cable to Central Europe, operational since May 2016.
Equally impressive are low latencies to Moscow (9ms) and St Petersburg (2ms).
So if you are impressed by power supply, then you should be impressed by connectivity as well.

Rail cargo center of the North-East Europe
Kouvola has a long history in the rail cargo business. City is one of the Rail Road Terminals of the Trans European Network (TEN-T). Rail road terminal further improves Kouvola’s position as a leading cargo center between East and West. Distance to Finnish biggest ports, Kotka-Hamina and Vuosaari Port in Helsinki, are 50km and 130km respectively. Both ports are connected to Kouvola via rail road and roads. For further information on Kouvola’s excellent logistics, please take a look to the video: Kouvola – Railgate Finland.
But Kouvola possesses even more in logistics than excellent location and rail and road connections. Kouvola is also investing to the development of the logistics. Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) has a unit in Kouvola and it is profiled as a center of expertise for railway logistics. And Kouvola Innovation is making new openings on the field of logistics.
Kouvola Innovation has entered to an agreement with IBM to develop blockchain technology. Program is called “IoT-Blockchain Design Partnership and Beta”. Blockchain technology is a revolutionary approach to data exchange, data storage and data processing. New technology enables optimization of cargo related data exchange in unprecedented way.
