From Study to Start-up
More than 900 mining industry decision-makers and experts will convene for the international Fennoskandian Exploration and Mining 2013 event at Levi on 29-31 October. CTS Engtec is one of the sponsors of the event.
Raimo Vikstedt, Director of Metal & Mining Business Area in CTS Engtec, emphasises the economic significance of the strong professional skills, and of the know-how in different sectors of industry that has been amassed over decades by the expert organisation for the mining venture.
- A mining company has many different kinds of things to do with a project. Consequently, listening to the customer and applying the need and extent planning so that it corresponds to the situation of the mining project and the working methods of a mining company are prerequisites for the cost-effective implementation of a project. In this way the mining company is able to focus on its core business. For service companies like ours it is important to offer services ranging from study to startup, he says.
Company of experts has strong professional knowledge
Recently CTS Engtec carried out a Definitive Feasibility Study on the Sokli mine produced by Yara International ASA. At present the CTS mining team is working as the construction management of the tailings pond of the Laivakangas mine in Raahe. The part commissioned by Nordic mines will be ready in November-December.
Vikstedt laments that the difficulties in the global financing situation, which have lasted longer than had been expected, as well as drawn-out bureaucratic processes, which for their part have slowed down investment activities by international mining companies, and have delayed the launch of planning scheme projects.
- The expectation is that planning projects will be launched in 2014. In addition to studies and basic and detailed engineering, we here at CTS Engtec are well prepared to offer expert services also in energy planning and water treatment for mining companies, owing to the long history of the company. The company has been operating for 40 years in these areas in heavy industry, and in the mining industry for a long time as well, Vikstedt says.
Extractive industry is a big chance for Finland
An increasingly difficult world market situation reflects both on companies in the Finnish mining industry and on international mining companies operating in Finland.
- We nevertheless have to remember that Finland is a country known for its expertise in mining technology, in which Outotec, for example, is a remarkable technology supplier. In addition, we have many rich deposits, by international standards, which should be exploited. Opening a mine always brings plenty of subcontracting work to an area, and the investment phase alone brings growing income to local authorities. And when we add to this the growth in the degree of refining of nearby metals, we are speaking about truly sustainable development, Vikstedt emphasises.
Many more questions and answers are expected at the prestigious FEM Conference and at the trade show booths, where the guests' interests and views on the future of the extractive industry will culminate. CTS will be showcasing its strong know-how and expert services at booth B 24.
